Growing Up Urban
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Doswell grew up like many other children living in inner city America. He learned early valuable life lessons of being independent, the rewards of discipline, the value of friendship and family, and the love for God. He was raised as the only child by Brenda Tucker Doswell, an educator, songtress, and entrepreneur, and Ronald Jayfus Doswell, a social worker, historian, and entrepreneur. Dr. Doswell’s was exposed early to the contributions of his “History Heroes” of antiquity such as Nzinga, “Hannibal the Great”, Imhotep, and Shaka Zulu that illustrated journeys requiring perseverance, strategy, intellect, fortitude, grace, and humility. These historical figures helped to shape Dr. Doswell’s character and his unyielding determination to achieve and benefit lives. He was also exposed to and excelled in piano and violin performance, martial arts, music composition, sports, choreography, visual arts, computer programming, languages, and science. However, he lacked the mathematic and technical mentorship to pursue his dream of becoming a neuro-surgeon or robotics engineer and consequently did not develop an early science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) foundation. One who does not like having limitations, he journeyed and achieved a Ph.D. in Information Technology to transform his weak foundation in STEM to now one of his greatest strengths. Dr. Doswell decided early to dedicate his life to serve as a symbol for those underserved and disadvantaged individuals who experience similar STEM related limitations. Consequently, Dr. Doswell achieved degrees in computer science and cognitive neuro-pscyhology at Oberlin College, Systems and Computer Science from Howard University, and a PhD in Information Technology from George Mason University, while at the same time, maintaining his skills in martial arts and music. Dr. Doswell will state that what propelled him the most to succeed were “The examples of greatness that proceeded him from which the bar of excellence he must raise”. His historic motivation is also deeply rooted into his DNA. Dr. Doswell is a descendent of a long African American Virginia history. His mother, is a direct descendent from the first African American child born in America, William Tucker from Jamestown, Virginia (1624). His father’s decedents were African American land owners and entrepreneurs, which we can still see historical remnants from Doswell, Virginia today. His biggest joy is contributing his knowledge to inspire, motivate, and grow the next generation of multidisciplinary leaders in academics, the workplace, and in entrepreneurship. Staying the Course Dr. Doswell, consulted with, and held leadership positions at several different companies and organizations, and federal agencies including Maryland Medical Systems, CompuServe, Lockheed Martin, BearingPoint, Scientific Applications International Corporation (SAIC), TRW, National Cancer Institute Center for Bioinformatics, among others companies. Dr. Doswell has spent over 13 years with a multidisciplinary concentration in advanced learning technologies and health informatics and health information technology research. Research Contributions
